Coupang announced on December 29 that it will implement a customer compensation plan worth 1.685 trillion won ($1.175 billion) in response to a recent personal data breach, aiming to restore customer trust. Harold Rogers, interim CEO of Coupang Korea, said the company fully acknowledges the concern and distress caused to customers and has prepared the compensation package as a responsible measure. Beginning January 15, Coupang will distribute purchase vouchers totaling 1.685 trillion won to customers whose accounts received data breach notifications in late November. Approximately 33.7 million accounts are eligible, including Wow members, general members, and even customers who have already closed their accounts.

Eligible customers will be notified sequentially via text messages with instructions on how to access and use the vouchers. Each customer will receive four single-use vouchers with a combined value of 50,000 won, consisting of 5,000 won applicable to all Coupang products—including Rocket Delivery, Rocket Direct, Seller Rocket, and the Coupang Marketplace—5,000 won for Coupang Eats, 20,000 won for Coupang Travel products, and 20,000 won for R.LUX products. Customers can view their vouchers through the Coupang app starting January 15 and apply them at checkout, with additional details to be announced separately. Rogers said Coupang will use the incident as an opportunity to reaffirm its commitment to customer-centric management and once again offered a sincere apology.
