The launch event on May 30 brought together POSCO Chairman Chang In-hwa, key executives, and representatives from major resource firms such as Hancock, BHP, Rio Tinto, and Pilbara Minerals, alongside researchers from institutions like CSIRO, MRIWA, and Curtin University. Chairman Chang emphasized that the new lab will serve as a strategic hub, combining Australia's rich resources with POSCO's technological strengths to enhance core business competitiveness and secure vital minerals.
The new center supports POSCO's localization strategy aimed at boosting raw material efficiency while cutting costs and carbon emissions. As the first Korean research facility of its kind in Australia, it will focus on low-carbon steel production, lithium and nickel processing innovations, and rare earth element refining. POSCO's long-standing partnerships with Australian resource companies, including ventures like Roy Hill and lithium production with PLS, have laid the groundwork for this expansion. Chairman Chang, also head of the Korea-Australia Economic Cooperation Committee, highlighted the lab's role in deepening bilateral industrial collaboration.
